A Career without Limits

When you consider your present career and where you are right now, in comparison to your short-term and long-term career goals, are you able to list anything that will prevent you from reaching those goals? Is there anything limiting your career or preventing you from making progress? The two most common forms of limitations that get in the way of professional development include those that are based in reality and those that are a result of perceptions. Identifying and addressing your potential limits will allow you to overcome obstacles and develop a career that is controlled by you in a proactive manner.

When you evaluate your present career and career goals it is likely that you may identify actual circumstances or conditions that pose a barrier for your future plans. For example, you may be unemployed, have physical limitations, live on a specific income level, or you do not yet have the education or experience required for a new position. The reality of your life right now is something that you can work with once you have addressed perceptual or reactive limitations. If you feel fear, develop self-doubts, or worry about your future, this negative self talk over any period of time may disguise itself as your reality. Most of us respond from the perspective of our perceptions and emotions before we address the actual facts of our reality.

If you can control the self talk and attitude you have about your potential you can then begin to analyze your actual limitations and determine a corrective course of action. When you consider your career from an objective point of view you can approach your goals logically, methodically, and in an organized manner. When you remove the emotions that surround your reality you may experience a better sense of control over your career and allow yourself to dream. More importantly, you can choose to believe anything about yourself that you are willing to accept. If you believe that you can overcome or achieve or accomplish anything you want to do regardless of your actual situation, you will develop the motivation necessary to make it happen.

There is a saying that the sky's the limit. If this is the case, what's holding you back? What is it that you are most afraid of when you think about the future of your career? What often holds us back is our fears of the unknown, whether we are uncertain of what we can do or we are capable of doing. Make a decision for yourself today that your perception of reality is less important than your dream of the future. Use your perceptions and emotions to develop a vision of your completed career goals and create your own reality of a career without any limits.

My best,

Dr. J
